US83 Roundabout
As plans for Belmont Crossings, an 80-acre mixed-use development in Wooster, Ohio, took shape, the developer was challenged with safely and efficiently managing the influx of new traffic at the busy US83 corridor. CESO was brought on to mitigate this challenge by designing a solution centered around a single-lane roundabout positioned at the intersection of US83 and the development’s main access drive. This signature feature has since improved traffic flow, reduced delays, and minimized conflict points for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

In addition to the roundabout design, CESO evaluated traffic patterns and roadway conditions along Burbank Road and Smithville-Western Road, integrating 2,800 linear feet of improvements on Burbank Road and 700 feet on Smithville-Western to accommodate future demand. Curb alignments, approach geometry, and pedestrian considerations were all refined to create a smooth transition into and out of the roundabout, promoting a functional gateway to Belmont Crossings.

To accommodate the physical improvements, our project team conducted a one-mile speed study on US83 to determine whether the posted 55-mile-per-hour speed limit remained appropriate. The study revealed that most vehicles were traveling well below that speed, providing a clear case to lower speeds and reduce the severity and likelihood of crashes. With CESO’s documentation, ODOT District 4 approved lowering the speed limit to 45 miles-per-hour, enhancing the safety and performance of the new roundabout and surrounding roadway. By pairing a modern roundabout with targeted roadway improvements and a data-driven speed limit reduction, CESO delivered a solution that creates a safer, more efficient environment that supports the growing mixed-use destination and protects everyone traveling through the corridor.
