Granville Signal Improvements

The Village of Granville sought to revitalize its downtown business district with safer pedestrian crossings, smoother traffic flow, and a streetscape that reflected its commitment to sustainability. CESO partnered with Village leaders to transform that vision into reality, weaving modern traffic operations, green infrastructure, and accessibility upgrades into one cohesive project.

The process began with walking the district with Village officials to better understand their goals for the project. During this visit we studied how drivers and pedestrians interacted with the intersections, identifying where small changes could make a significant difference. Data collected by our in-house survey experts guided several design alternatives, resulting in the chosen design of three interconnected and updated traffic signals, a mid-block crossing with a mast-arm-mounted rectangular rapid flashing beacon, and curb-line bump-outs to shorten crossing distances and provide traffic calming measures.

Beyond traffic signals, the project reshaped the Village’s public realm. High-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps, and sidewalk upgrades now create a friendlier, more inclusive downtown experience. Roadside rain gardens, raised landscape beds, and sustainable plantings capture stormwater runoff and add greenery, reinforcing the Village’s goals for a sustainable design.

CESO also helped the Village stretch its resources by preparing a successful ODOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) application, securing $850,000 in project funding. The result is a safer, more vibrant, and sustainably-sound downtown district that supports local businesses and enhances everyday life for both residents and visitors.
