Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park
Preliminary Study
CESO partnered with KPFF to deliver a preliminary analysis of the Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park pedestrian bridge structure.
The project team collaborated with ODNR to evaluate the feasibility of the Falls Edge Glass Walkway, a new pedestrian bridge envisioned as a signature destination within the Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park. The concept involved a permanent, glass-deck structure spanning one of the park’s dramatic rock formations and aims to create an immersive visitor experience while honoring the site’s rugged natural character.
CESO led a comprehensive preliminary analysis to explore multiple design variables, including structure type, span location, geometry, materials, constructability, and long-term durability in a challenging environment. The study extended beyond engineering considerations to include a preliminary environmental investigation due to the sensitive ecological setting. CESO identified potential impacts to park resources and developed strategies to reduce disturbance to native habitat, geological features, and visitor access during construction. The resulting analysis provided a strong technical foundation for future project phases, balancing innovation with preservation as ODNR advances this landmark pedestrian bridge concept.
